Christmas Carol Countdown: December 22: Twas the Night Before Christmas

What? It isn’t a carol? It should be. Come on I would like it if carolers came up and read this poem to me. Okay I’m almost out of songs and I’m getting desperate. I have 23-26 lined up along with new years eve. I would have put this song for the 24 but I have one that’s better for there.

Umm well because of the debated origins I’ll let you decide if either Clement Clarke Moore or Henry Livingston, Jr wrote it. Go find your favorite biased articles to decide.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

“Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Christmas Carol Countdown: December 21: What Child Is This?

“What Child Is This?” is a popular Christmas carol written in 1865. … [by] William Chatterton Dix

(Wikipedia)

As it is Christmas week. This would be a perfect carol. only 4 more days!

1. What child is this, who, laid to rest,
On Mary’s lap is sleeping,
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The baby, the son of Mary!

2. Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and [donkey] are feeding?
Good Christian, fear: for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spear shall pierce him through,
The Cross be borne for me, for you;
Hail, hail the Word Made Flesh,
The babe, the son of Mary!

3. So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh;
Come, peasant, king, to own Him!
The King of Kings salvation brings;
Let loving hearts enthrone Him!
Raise, raise the song on high!
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy! joy! for Christ is born,
The babe, the son of Mary!

Christmas Carol Countdown: December 18, 19, 20: I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In; O Christmas Tree ; O Come All Ye Faithful,

I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In:

“I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In)” is a traditional and popular Christmas carol from England. A variant of its parent tune “Greensleeves”, the earliest printed version of “I Saw Three Ships” is from the 17th century, possibly Derbyshire, and was also published by William B. Sandys in 1833.

Wikipedia

I really have nothing else on this song. So sad.

I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
I saw three ships come sailing in
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?
And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas Day in the morning?

The Virgin Mary and Christ were there,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
The Virgin Mary and Christ were there,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

Pray, wither sailed those ships all three,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
Pray, wither sailed those ships all three,
On Christmas Day in the morning?

O they sailed into Bethlehem,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
O they sailed into Bethlehem,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the bells on earth shall ring,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the bells on earth shall ring,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the Angels in Heaven shall sing,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the Angels in Heaven shall sing,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

And all the souls on earth shall sing,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
And all the souls on earth shall sing,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

Then let us all rejoice again,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
Then let us all rejoice again,
On Christmas Day in the morning.

Puzzle 22

Late? Yes.

A man who lives on the tenth floor takes the elevator down to the first floor every morning and goes to work. In the evening, when he comes back; on a rainy day, or if there are other people in the elevator, he goes to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment.
Can you explain why?
There are probably many possible answers but the correct one is the most satisfying.

Christmas Carol Countdwn: December 16-17: Joy to the World; Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

Before I begin I would like to say this is post #100. Expect something that used to be common but has not been around for about a year to come back. Now to the carols.

Joy to the World

Joy! to the world! Go! now! We need joy. But she tends to procrastinate so she’ll get around to us in… 1007-2000 years, maybe more. Coincidentally it was made by Isaac Watts for the time joy will be in the world (1007-2000 years from now, maybe more.) Not for Christmastime. But the way he made it was kinda off and because of the lyrics fit so well churches began using it as a Christmas carol; removing the 3rd verse which clearly implies the coming kingdom after the 1000 year reign. So this is a… other carol but used for Christmas.

Verse 1

Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Verse 2

Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

Verse 3

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Original 3rd verse:

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

It was originally made by Charles Wesley (brother of John Wesley) pre-1739 (the first known publish date). But George Whitefield re-made it to be what we sing now. It’s very popular among carolers and churches.

Hark the herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled”
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem”
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ by highest heav’n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris’n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christmas carol countdown: December 14 and 15: Go Tell It on the Mountain; Deck the Halls

Go Tell It on the Mountain

“Go Tell It on the Mountain” is an African-American spiritual made by John W. Work in 1865. It was a nativity carol that is sung today. but not as often as some others. Not much is known about this song (from the two pages I searched [jk]). So straight to the music.

Refrain
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.

While shepherds kept their watching
o’er silent flocks by night,
Behold, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light
Refrain

The shepherds feared and trembled,
When lo! above the earth,
Rang out the angels chorus
That hailed our Savior’s birth.
Refrain

Down in a lowly manger
The humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas morn.
Refrain

Deck the Halls

Hmm… no holly. Can I deck the halls with something else? Leaves? Branches? Cheesy songs? Well it’s the time that community centers start decking the halls for parties. And homes deck the halls to prepare for relatives. But not me. No relatives coming! this carol was originally a welsh new years carol. Now it is a Christmas/new years carol. Most have heard it. Especially people with carolers.

So redecorate your house as a ship and make the halls the deck. Dress up in last years embarrassing Christmas present. Sing a Christmas carol. Put a carved imitation of Santa on the fire next to the nativity scene. Buy a harp and smack it with a hammer. Bury a Christmas stocking in your backyard, and tell the tale. Strap a 2010 calendar onto a model rocket and have the kids blast it off. Sing a off-pitch song with your relatives in a snowstorm. Just have fun.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
‘Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow me in merry measure,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
While I tell of Yuletide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Christmas Carol Countdown: December 12, 13: The Holly and the Ivy; The Twelve Days of Christmas

The Holly and the Ivy

“The Holly and the Ivy” is an English traditional Christmas carol. “Holly and ivy have been the mainstay of Christmas decoration for church use since at least the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when they are mentioned regularly in churchwardens’ accounts” (Roud 2004). Holly and ivy also figure in the lyrics of the “Sans Day Carol”. The music and most of the text was first published by Cecil Sharp.[1] Sir Henry Walford Davies wrote a popular choral arrangement that is often performed at the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and by choirs around the world.

(wikipedia)

I, once again, had never heard of this song until I started research. It’s okay though a pretty neat song

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown.
Refrain:
Oh, the rising of the sun and the running of the deer,
The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir.
The holly bears a blossom as white as lily flower,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to be our sweet saviour
Refrain
The holly bears a berry as red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ to do poor sinners good.
Refrain
The holly bears a prickle as sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ on Christmas Day in the morn.
Refrain
The holly bears a bark as bitter as any gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ for to redeem us all.
Refrain

The Twelve Days of Christmas

Ahh a great song. There are twelve days till Christmas. It is about the twelve days after Christmas but I’m not going to write it on January 6th. The great thing about this song is that you can insert whatever lyrics you wan so you can make variants for yourself. No one really knows where it came from so history is mostly speculation.

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me…
12 Drummers Drumming
11 Pipers Piping
10 Lords-a-Leaping
9 Ladies Dancing
8 Maids-a-Milking
7 Swans-a-Swimming
6 Geese-a-Laying
5 Golden Rings (gold rings)
4 Colly Birds
3 French Hens
2 Turtle Doves
And a Partridge in a Pear Tree.
