Christmas carol countdown: December 14 and 15: Go Tell It on the Mountain; Deck the Halls

Go Tell It on the Mountain

“Go Tell It on the Mountain” is an African-American spiritual made by John W. Work in 1865. It was a nativity carol that is sung today. but not as often as some others. Not much is known about this song (from the two pages I searched [jk]). So straight to the music.

Refrain
Go, tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain,
That Jesus Christ is born.

While shepherds kept their watching
o’er silent flocks by night,
Behold, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light
Refrain

The shepherds feared and trembled,
When lo! above the earth,
Rang out the angels chorus
That hailed our Savior’s birth.
Refrain

Down in a lowly manger
The humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas morn.
Refrain

Deck the Halls

Hmm… no holly. Can I deck the halls with something else? Leaves? Branches? Cheesy songs? Well it’s the time that community centers start decking the halls for parties. And homes deck the halls to prepare for relatives. But not me. No relatives coming! this carol was originally a welsh new years carol. Now it is a Christmas/new years carol. Most have heard it. Especially people with carolers.

So redecorate your house as a ship and make the halls the deck. Dress up in last years embarrassing Christmas present. Sing a Christmas carol. Put a carved imitation of Santa on the fire next to the nativity scene. Buy a harp and smack it with a hammer. Bury a Christmas stocking in your backyard, and tell the tale. Strap a 2010 calendar onto a model rocket and have the kids blast it off. Sing a off-pitch song with your relatives in a snowstorm. Just have fun.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
‘Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow me in merry measure,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
While I tell of Yuletide treasure,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Fast away the old year passes,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa la la la la, la la la la.
